A 10-month course that becomes a career.
Established in 1962, the Balasevika Training Institute (BSTI) offers a 10-month programme for young women from rural and urban areas who have appeared for the 10th Standard examination, equipping them with the knowledge and practical skills for careers in childcare, education and community service.
Free hostel facilities provide accommodation, food, basic amenities and the supervision of a resident warden, and KSCCW facilitates job placements once trainees complete their training. Around 2,800 candidates have been trained over the years.
What trainees learn
The course combines theory and hands-on practice across:
- Child Development & Preschool Education
- Special Education & Early Intervention
- Social Work & Community Participation
- Health & Nutrition
- Vocational skills — sewing & tailoring, teaching aids, crafts, spoken English and basic computer skills
Trainees gain practical exposure through fieldwork at special schools, preschools and social-work centres, along with institutional visits.
Life at the institute
Skill enhancement is supported through workshops on self-grooming, low-cost teaching aids, yoga, art and craft, and indoor and outdoor group activities. Annual cultural competitions give trainees a stage to showcase their talents.
Placement & careers
Campus recruitment places trainees with NGOs, garment industries, special schools, preschools and other organisations — working as preschool teachers, assistant teachers in special schools, social and community workers, caregivers and house mothers in children's homes, or becoming self-employed.
